One gram of protein provides 4 kilocalories (kcal) of energy. This value is standardised across nutrition science worldwide and is the figure used on all food labels, nutrition databases and dietary guidelines.

Fat’s energy density of 9 kcal/g — more than double protein and carbs — explains why high-fat foods are calorie-dense in small portions. A tablespoon of olive oil (14g) contains 126 kcal almost entirely from fat. The same weight of cooked chicken breast contains approximately 23 kcal from protein alone.
Where the number comes from — Atwater factors
The 4 kcal/g figure for protein comes from the Atwater general factors, developed by chemist Wilbur Olin Atwater in the late 19th century. Atwater measured the heat of combustion of various foods in a bomb calorimeter, then adjusted for average digestibility and urinary losses to arrive at the net usable energy per gram.
The exact values from Atwater’s measurements are slightly higher in raw form (protein yields approximately 5.65 kcal/g of combustion energy) but after accounting for digestibility and the energy lost in urine as urea — a metabolic byproduct of protein breakdown — the net usable energy settles at approximately 4 kcal/g.

The thermic effect — why protein calories behave differently
Although protein contains 4 kcal/g on paper, the body expends more energy digesting and processing protein than it does for carbohydrates or fat. This is called the thermic effect of food (TEF).

In practice this means that a high-protein diet has a marginally higher metabolic cost than an equivalent calorie diet based on carbohydrates or fat — approximately 20–30% of protein calories are burned off in digestion and processing. This is one reason high-protein diets tend to support fat loss more effectively than the raw calorie numbers suggest.
How to use protein kcal per gram in practice
Converting a protein target to calories
If your goal is to eat 150g of protein per day: 150g × 4 kcal/g = 600 kcal from protein. If your total daily calorie target is 2,000 kcal, that means 30% of your calories come from protein (600 ÷ 2,000 = 0.30).
Converting a calorie percentage to grams
If you want 25% of 2,000 kcal from protein: 2,000 × 0.25 = 500 kcal from protein ÷ 4 kcal/g = 125g of protein per day.
Setting your protein target based on bodyweight
The evidence-based recommendation for adults trying to build or maintain muscle is 1.6–2g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day. For a 75 kg person, that is 120–150g protein per day — equivalent to 480–600 kcal from protein.

Do protein calories count the same as fat or carb calories?
On a food label, yes — 1 kcal of protein = 1 kcal of fat = 1 kcal of carbohydrate. In practice, protein has a higher thermic effect, meaning the body burns 20–30% of protein calories during digestion compared to 5–10% for carbs and 0–3% for fat. This means 100 kcal of protein has a net metabolic cost of approximately 70–80 kcal, versus 90–95 kcal for an equivalent amount of carbohydrate. Protein calories are not more or less valuable — they are metabolised differently.
How do I calculate how many calories come from protein in a food?
Multiply the grams of protein in the food by 4. For example, if a food contains 25g of protein, it contributes 25 × 4 = 100 kcal from protein. To find the percentage of calories from protein, divide protein calories by total calories: 100 ÷ 400 total kcal = 25% protein. This calculation works for any food with a nutrition label showing grams of protein and total calories.
How much protein do I need per day?
For general health, the RDA is 0.8g per kg of bodyweight. For muscle gain or maintenance during fat loss, the evidence-based range is 1.6–2g per kg of bodyweight. Why does fat have more kcal per gram than protein?
Fat has a higher energy density because of its chemical structure — fat molecules contain more carbon-hydrogen bonds than protein or carbohydrate molecules, and those bonds release more energy when broken down. Fat yields 9 kcal/g compared to 4 kcal/g for protein and carbohydrates. This is not a nutritional advantage or disadvantage — it simply means fat is more calorie-dense per gram, which matters when planning portion sizes. A 10g portion of fat contains 90 kcal; the same weight of protein contains 40 kcal.
